Research

Hans Memling is one of the great masters among the Early Netherlandish painters. To unravel his secrets, intensive research will take place in the coming years with the help of the latest technologies and renowned international partners, including the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA). This is not without good reason. Research is an important pillar in Musea Brugge’s policy and the basis for better conservation and management of our extraordinary collection of paintings.

The first phase of the research started on 24 April 2023: the seven Memlings in the Museum Saint John’s Hospital were studied in-depth. Musea Brugge commissioned KIK-IRPA to produce the research images. From 18 January to 28 February 2024, Memling’s Moreel Triptych and Annunciation were examined in situ at the Groeningemuseum. The results of this research will be made accessible to everyone on this website and via various public apps.
